Dear Friend,
The thing I love most about art - in all of its various forms - is how its greatest expression is something that reflects the creator’s thoughts, feelings, and ideas. Often, that expression touches our lives in some way. Through art we are giving the gift of being seen or receiving the gift of seeing - either way, it’s an exceptional experience to be a part of.
When we create without judgement, without a desire to “get it right’ and purely to explore and express, we will often come face-to-face with our voice. In a society that desperately wants you tuned into the world outside of you and live the story it creates, art is an invitation to step into that exquisite space within you which wants nothing but the best for you. That’s what I tuned into as I was playing with this piece.
Look at that piece above - is it chaos within? Just that thought makes me laugh out loud. It doesn’t feel like chaos so much as the most fun playground - and it’s inside of me. I discovered so much by simply letting go and pushing myself to continue even when I had no clue where I was headed.
I started with the lines - no thought as I just allowed my hand to move along the page and when I saw the shapes emerge I knew it was time for color. The pools of color led to doodles; I loved this idea of places, people and animals - random things - in the windows. The more I worked on it, the more it reminded me of growing up in an apartment building. Each window framing the life of the creatures that live in that space and from there, images of characters, ideas for stories began. And there is so much more in here - what do you see?
Do you see how simply allowing yourself to draw or doodle, to drop a bit of color on a page can lead you on an adventure that only you can create? When you relax enough to allow yourself to be led by whatever moves you in the moment, without thinking, you never know what magic you might find.
I know that Sunday can be a challenging day for some as you think about the week ahead, that’s why it’s also a great day to do a little something that brings you peace and joy. Find just a little time to take a break from whatever you are doing and give yourself permission to create with no intention other than to see where your pen or paintbrush, marker or crayon might lead you. Draw lines, shapes, drop color on a page and do that one thing for 5 -15 minutes to see what you find. What’s the worst that could happen - your mind relaxes while you delight yourself and have some fun? I think that’s worth trying, don’t you?
Happy Sunday!
Natasha
This is so fun! At first I was like wooh this is nuts, but then I just sat with it and found the dude in the window, and the purple horse looking over it's shoulder and the blue bird above the horse. Then I saw the stick people, one doing yoga and then the poor fella falling down some frozen steps like home alone! That's going to leave a mark. Then of course the dog!!! This made my night! You're the best!!!
Love the colors and little critters!
